Why A Writer Writes

I had an experience recently that answered the question for me: why do writers write? I was sitting in my office working on my next book.

Writers' doubts.

As I worked, I was thinking the thoughts all writers must think when starting a new project: What am I doing? Why am I writing this book? Will I ever finish it? Will it ever amount to anything? Will anyone ever want to read it? Will it make a difference in the world?

A call from a reader.

Just then, the phone rang.

"Hello, I'm George Mabon," the caller said. "I'm an estates lawyer."

I said, "Yes sir, what can I do for you today?"

"Well, you've already done it," he said. "I just called to say thank you for your article on how to estimate costs in business litigation."

My mind raced back through all of the articles I had ever written on many subjects: intuition, manifestation, healing, and earlier articles in my chosen profession, law. What article, I thought.

"Could you please remind me a little bit about the article, Mr. Mabon?" I said.

"Yes, it's the one where you talk about all of the different types of attorney and client time and expense that have to go into the litigation process and how whether to take any of those steps has to be balanced against their cost and the amount in controversy in the dispute."

My mind keeps racing back until it comes to the shocking realization that the article he's talking about was published in a local bar association magazine 30 years ago.

"If I recall, Mr. Mabon, that article was written quite some time ago," I said.

"Yes, but I've been using it a couple of times a month ever since it came out. You see, I mostly write wills and trusts, but people often ask me about disputes and courts. And I use your article to tell them what they can expect by way of costs. The article is quite accurate and my clients experience usually comes out just like the article predicts. And I was doing that again today, and I realized that I had never said thanks for all the help that that article has allowed me to give my clients over the years. So, I wanted to call and do that."

"Wow, thank YOU, Mr. Mabon," I said, "you've made my day!"

"You're welcome," he said.

We talk for a while, and, after exchanging a few more pleasantries, we ring off.

Encouragement today from an old article.

And I get to think about it. That article was on of the first ones I had ever written, and it was done 30 years ago. I remember wondering at the time whether anyone would publish it, whether anyone would read it, and whether it would make any difference, or whether it would get lost in the blizzard of information everyone's exposed to.

And now, whilst thinking similar thoughts about the book I'm currently working on, I get a call out of the blue from someone who read the old article when it was published and who has often used it during the past 30 years to make a difference in his world.

The gifts of intuition and the means to carry it out.

And I think: that's why writers write: something inside prompts them to share an experience that's meant to be shared in a way that will make some difference in the world. And that intuition carries with it the energy to overcome all of the drawbacks, rejections, and difficulties to putting that experience into print and out to the world.

I'm thankful to Mr. Mabon for calling to thank me, and I'm thankful to the universe for Mr. Mabon's call at a key moment to remind me that writers are given special gifts. Writers are first given the ability to communicate insight through the written word to others. Writers are then given the gift of life experience. They are sometimes given the gift of insight into that experience. And when an intuition with an insight into experience comes, writers are given the gift of the creative energy to make their writing exist in a tangible form accessible to the world.

Why writers write.

Why do writers write? They write because they have been given something special. They write because they are compelled to. They write because they are fulfilling their destiny to use the gifts they have been given to make a difference in the world.

And that's why writers write.

The Serious Creative Writer Need Never Apologise For Remaining Serious - Stick To Your Strengths!

By Sandy Shaw Platinum Quality Author Sandy Shaw
Level: Platinum

Sandy Shaw is Pastor of Nairn Christian Fellowship, Chaplain at Inverness Prison, and Nairn Academy, and serves on The Children's Panel in Scotland, and has ...

Creative writing can be a vague and interpretive phrase! What does it really mean? Who are the creative writers? Are not all writers creative?

When I am reading I do not really want to waste my time reading writing which is not relevant and applicable to my life and work. I am just one of these serious chaps!

There is one area where I would seek to be creative though. I long to create a desire that people would come to know God through Jesus Christ and most of my writing and the talks that I prepare have that one aim in mind. The teaching aspect must not be forgotten because when people are born again they need to be fed with milk and meat so that they might grow and develop and ultimately mature.

Almighty God speaks to men and women today and to young people too. It was when I was eight years old that I was aware of God speaking to my heart.

Our God, the God and Father of our Saviour and Lord, Jesus Christ, is a God who speaks. Our living God had spoken through the prophets many times, and in various ways, but there came that moment when He spoke to men through His Son, Jesus.

Jesus is God's last word to the world. The final vital word God had to speak, He spoke it, in Jesus, and through Jesus.

God's word is not just something you hear. It is someone you see.

An amazing letter was written to Hebrew disciples of Jesus. Today, these disciples would be called Messianic Jews. The letters of Peter and Jacob were also written by Messianic Jews. Paul would be regarded as a Messianic Jew.

We do not know who wrote this letter but what we do know is important. These believers had not grown up. They had not matured. They were Jews who were holding onto Judaism, rather than Jesus Christ. They had come out of their old religious ways, but not fully. This is why the letter has so much to teach us today. The writer sounds many warnings. If you only come halfway you will tend to drift sooner or later.

Because of subtle external pressures these disciples of Jesus, who had had profound spiritual experiences, were being tempted to fall away, back into the familiar, or compromise here and there. The letter to the Hebrews portrays Jesus as better and superior to anything that has gone before, and emphasises Christ's uniqueness. It is absurd to try and place anyone else alongside Jesus Christ. Many would consider that Jesus Christ is just one of the ways to God the Father, but Jesus says, "No man comes to the Father except through me". Now, that is solemn and serious, but true.

When I write my longing is to be more than creative, and that is where content and substance assume an importance and prominence. The serious writer need never apologise for being serious, and the serious writer should continue to be serious if that is where he feels his strengths lie.

Writer Cars

Now the writers car should have no payment. This is a must. This prevents the writers car from being snatched when times get hard. A constant condition. So the writers car should be over ten years old with a good 150k on the odometer. This will allow the writer to bargain hard by pointing out the mileage and the fact the car is a gas hog (old Explorers and trucks are excellent writer cars because no one wants them) If you can get a smaller car then so much the better, but most writers end up with a lot old lead sleds. Under no circumstances do you wash the writer car inside or out. This allows you to save boat loads of money and makes you less conspicuous in bad neighborhoods.

So now you have the writer car and you have to fill it. There should be overdue books from the library floating around the back seat or on the floor. These can be current or obscure novels that the library desperately wants back and the writer just can't seem to get them out of his car. Along with these old books are notes for future books, notebooks from old books, a collection of CDs that still play with an amazing amount of scratches led off by the Best of George Thorogood that amazingly seems to play no many how many times it travels around the car as an errant flying saucer.

Coffee cups should abound in the console of the writer car firmly adhered into their cup holders, welded tightly since just after 9/11 when you anxiously drank from your mug while listening to hours of NPR. For some reason taking the writer mug out of the writer car seems just too hard and so it has become part of the writer car. Now there should be many wrappers from fast food with french fries that amazingly never decay. If you ever doubt there are chemicals in french fries, leave one in your car for several seasons and after being baked and frozen you will be amazed to find it looks exactly the same.

Finally, there should be books hidden under the seats. Maybe a dog eared copy of Catcher in the Rye or a collection of essays by David Foster Wallace. Anything that you can grab while going into coffee houses all over America. Having these books firmly wedged under the seat allows you never to be caught without reading material. The beauty of the writers car is that it is totally expendable. If Floyd or Hank deems you needing a new transmission or engine, then you can just leave the writer car (just be sure to take all your books and old fries, you never know) and then walk on and go find another one. Get on the Internet and find another one. Craigslist is heavy with writer cars.
