Simple Words for a Succinct Book - One Writer's Brevity Challenge

To be a writer is to challenge youself. When I reach the mid-point of a book I let out a huge sigh because I know I'll make it to the end. But I've had times when I thought I would never get to the end of a chapter, let alone the book. You may have had similar writing experiences.

Writing "short," choosing simple words and creating simple sentences with them, takes more time than writing "long."

Ernest Hemingway was a master of brevity. I was in high school when his famous book, "The Old Man and the Sea," was released. If I recall, the entire book was published in "Life" magazine. Though I was a young, immature student, I appreciated his story line and sentence structure. Of his own writing Hemingway said he looked at words as if he was seeing them for the first time.

"My aim is to put down on paper what I see and what I feel in the best and simplest way," he noted. I'm no Hemingway, yet I can strive for simplicity.

Jack Dorsey shares his thoughts about simple words in an Art Institute of Pittsburgh article, "The Art of Writing for Brevity." The purpose of writing is to communicate a specific message, according to Dorsey. As he says, "It is harder to be brief with this message than it is to write a lengthy piece." Dorsey's tips for achieving brevity: trim the fat, choose words carefully, cut words, use the active voice, write first and edit later.

My recent writing focuses on grief, a niche that came about after losing four family members, including my daughter, in 2007. While this can be a painful niche, I find comfort in the fact that I'm creting resources to help others. One day, when I was writing an article, an idea for an affirmations book popped into my head.

The idea was so strong that I abandoned the article and started writing affirmations. Once I started I couldn't stop, and wrote affirmations for days. Sentences came to me at odd times, so I kept a pad and pencil handy. Later, I entered these words into the computer. I printed the book out, put it away for several weeks, and made the necessary revisions.

Since mourners have trouble remembering what they have read, I wrote one-sentence affirmations only -- words the reader could remember during the day. Writing an affirmations book isn't a new idea, but I added a new twist. Each affirming sentence is followed by a focus word or words. These words can be used for self-examination, support group discussions, meditation, or prayer.

When I had written scores of affirmations to help mourners, I stopped writing them. I added a short preface, affirmation-writing steps, and a list of grief support groups. Only someone who has experienced multiple losses, someone like me, could write this book. Though it is short, only 60 pages, it is filled with comforting and hopeful words.

Are you stuck on a writing project? Writing "short" may be the answer. Simple words have much to say and can even change a life.

Short Story Writing Made Easy

I always wanted to write short stories, but I didn't have a clue how. So I read books on the subject and experimented. Eventually, I discovered how to do it.

The first step is to decide the genre you want to write in. Is the story a mystery? Is it science fiction? Is it romance?

Next you must come up with an idea. The important thing about the idea is that it must have conflict. As a fun example, perhaps your idea involves an alien that comes to earth because on his planet cheese is very valuable and they've run out. The conflict would come when he tries to steal some cheese on earth and the police catch him.

A short story consists of three parts--a beginning, middle and end. The beginning is where you introduce the main character and tell us all about him or her. Make us like your main character. That way, we will be more likely to follow his adventures. There are, of course, stories where the main character is not likable, but these are harder to write.

The middle is where the conflict comes into play. In our example, this is where the alien steals cheese from a store, and is apprehended by the police.

Finally, there is the ending. This is part where the conflict is resolved. The alien explains his need for cheese and the people feel sympathy. They give him some Gouda and send him on his way.

Once you've written the story you must go over it again to make sure it's as good as you can make it. One tip is to remove most of the "ly" words such as quickly or gently. Too many of these are regarded as being amateurish. Also, you may want to cut down on the number of times you use the word, "was." You should look for more interesting words.

When your story is as good as you can make it, send it out. If you write, 'markets for short stories' in your internet browser you will find many markets that will publish your story.

Be prepared to wait for a while to hear back. This will give you time to work on your next story.

Good luck and keep Writing!

Six Tips on Writing Poetry for Children

Entertain is the key word. You shouldn't want to write for children to teach them. Your job as a writer is to entertain them with an engaging poem. Children love to be captured by a story which ignites their imaginations. Here are some tips to help the beginning writer get started in the right direction.

Tip One

Children love to rhyme. Decide which of the two verses for the children's market you wish to write. The first one is children's poetry and the second is rhyming stories or rhyming prose.

Children's poetry should take an ordinary situation and turn it into an extraordinary episode. Poetry should be lighthearted or funny. Rhyming words appeal to children who are learning how to read.
Children's rhyming stories are like Dr. Seuss stories. They are stories in picture books with strong openings, believable, characters, an interesting plot, a satisfying ending and above all words which rhyme.

Tip Two

Decide your target audience. Do you wish to write for babies, preschoolers, young readers, or upper elementary? You should also decide if you want to write Christian poetry or for the general market.

Tip Three

When brainstorming the type of poem you want to write for children, decide your topic. Children's poems usually tell a story. Begin by picturing a moment in a child's life, a highlight moment. Explore the emotions surrounding that event in a child's day. Use strong visual images or a specific emotion to evoke in your reader. If you choose to write a funny poem, give it a punch line which will surprise the reader.

Tip Four

Select a point of view for your poem. First person uses the pronoun, I/We. Second person uses the pronoun, You. Third person uses the pronouns, He/She/It/They. For people characters, first person usually works better because it places the reader in the character's mind, drawing the reader closer to the story. With animal characters, third person works better. Whichever point of view you choose, please remember to choose one viewpoint and stick with it. Don't hop from one viewpoint to another viewpoint.

Tip Five

Pick the tone and emotion of your poem. Different ideas you could use are: exciting, sad, mysterious, scary, mischievous, happy, angry, nervous, or lighthearted. You should work at establishing your voice. Finding your writing voice is paramount for becoming a successful writer.

Tip Six

Write a list of words. These types of lists are extremely helpful for the writer. Once you decide what type of poem you want to write make a list of strong action verbs, descriptive adjectives, and rhyming words. As you write you can consult these lists to help make your writing stronger.

Conclusion

One aspect of Christian poetry is writing for children. You can choose to write children's poems or children's rhyming stories. Either way your poem will delight and entertain your readers.

Story Ideas From the 4 Seasons

I wrote the following in my writing journal in late winter:

"A bird sang outside my window this morning. It was startling, but quite welcome, considering that we have just come out of two weeks of double-digit sub-zero temperatures and more snow than normal. It's an unmistakable sign that spring is not too far off."

Hopefully you've noticed that, as spring approaches, there's a different aroma in the air. And in a sixth sense sort of way, there's anticipation in the air, as well. The landscape is changing from snowy white to soggy brown and in places yellow-green as the snow mountains that decorate parking lots and roads begin to melt. Such details are the stuff of good fiction. They can inspire theme, setting, characters or a possible story situation.

So regardless of what season you are in, it's important for you as a writer to make note of the details and nuances of that time of year. Observe your responses to weather or weather-related incidents/activities, as well as the reactions and behavior of people around you.

Why is this necessary? Well, if you don't do this and you're, say, in Tahiti trying to write about winter in Vermont (and I would be so jealous if you were!) I guarantee you'll have difficulty making your readers shiver with cold and feel snowflakes kissing their cheeks unless you have previously recorded impressions from winter -- that or you have an eidetic memory. If I had not written about that late winter experience and the context of the incident, I might not remember the impact that bird's song had on me. And I would have missed a great slice of life to use in a short story or a novel.

The key is to catalog the input that your five senses (and even your sixth sense) take in, WHILE YOU'RE IN THE MOMENT.

So when in Tahiti, while taking a break from writing about building a snowman, making snow angels and skiing in Vermont, be sure to record the sights and sounds unique to where you are:
the feel of tropical breezes caressing your skinthe smell of the seathe pounding surfthe shushing of palm branchesthe thud of coconuts fallingthe water lapping at the stilts of your hut hotelinsects in your hutthe tastes of unusual cuisineisland traditionsexotic-looking men and womenunique entertainmentlocal legends

And so that you can write about winter wherever you are, regardless of the season, make note of activities like this and many more:
quintessential snow days where children are sledding and delighted to be out of schoola glorious day for skiingdigging out after a blizzardnavigating country roads (or freeways) in treacherous, drifting snowthe race to batten down the hatches when high winds are about to pummel your homethe sound of the wind: does it whistle or moan?when you came inside, what did you smell? Hot chocolate to warm you? Chicken soup to soothe you? Do those smells take you back to another time and place?

Make similar lists for spring and summer, as well.

Be Prepared

I recommend having a notepad always handy for those moments when you're away from your writing area, like when you come inside from shoveling snow and you feel your cheeks begin to thaw and your eyeglasses fog up.

Don't neglect everyday situations unique to the season. (e.g. - chopping wood, loading up the wood stove, shoveling the sidewalk, thawing snow/ice for barn or field animals to drink, etc.) If something happens only at a particular time of year, or as a direct result of a weather-related occurrence, WRITE IT DOWN!

What Journal Will You Use?

Now let's talk about an actual "journal" to use for documenting your observations, reactions and feelings. What you decide on should fit with your personality and personal preferences.

Some choices:
fancy leather journalsimple cloth-bound or paper-back journalspiral notebookcomputer spreadsheet programword processing document file

The advantage to a digital journal is that it's searchable and sortable. With a physical journal, however, you'll need to set up your system of how to organize the information.

You might begin a naturalist's journal, commenting on temperature, humidity, other weather phenomena, and your observations of flora and fauna.

For example, you might comment on the antics of a pair of squirrels chasing one another from tree to tree, across the telephone cable, up the side of a house, scrambling across the roof, etc. Perhaps you discovered crocuses poking their heads through the snow in your garden.

A multi-subject notebook with tabs would lend itself well to this naturalist's journal. Create a label for each season or for certain months. Some of these notebooks have pockets in the divider pages where you could store photos from each season, pressed leaves, bird feathers, etc.

Of course you need not be limited to observations about weather. Here are some suggestions:
Capture the sights, sounds, smells, feel and tastes of any given day, so that you can recall what it was like.Take photos as a way to jog your memory.Record sounds if possible, such as the delighted squeals of children sledding, the crunch-crunch of people digging out their cars after snow and ice storms, the music of the calliope or merry-go-round at a carnival, the desperately pathetic cries of the mothers of calves who have been weaned and removed to another location.Pay attention to your reaction to aromas -- good or bad: e.g.- skunk, cotton candy, chlorine at the pool, wood smoke, a backyard barbecue, etc.

What can you do with this seasonal information?

Here are 14 story starter ideas, given in the form of questions relating to the four seasons. Take your characters through a weather transition, possibly even using the seasons as a metaphor or to support your underlying theme. (Savvy non-fiction writers can draw inspiration here, too.)

Spring

- If Spring is delayed, is there a sudden crime wave because people have "cabin fever," or is there something else going on, some other influence? Why is Spring delayed? Is it a natural phenomenon? This could be science fiction, mystery, thriller or horror.

- Premature Spring gives everyone a bad case of Spring Fever, including the teachers. What madcap situations can you envision?

- Spring sports, including injuries, might be a topic to explore with your characters, at least as a sub-plot -- particularly if you write for teens.

Summer

- Heat wave sends tempers flaring in the city and crime takes a sudden frightening trend upward.

- Drought plagues an area for the third year in a row, leading to famine. What desperate measures do people take to secure water and food?

- Examine summer vacation from a unique perspective -- the family pets, the air conditioner unit, the house when it's unoccupied with the family traveling, etc.

- July 4th celebrations in the U.S.are a big deal in most communities. What might turn an ordinary event into a disaster? A miracle? A phenomenon?

Autumn

- Follow the stages of fall as it progresses from crisp, bright days full of color, to soggy, cold nights, to leafless, bleak, almost-winter landscapes, using the evolution of the season to characterize your protagonist's life.

- Fall is a time of more beginnings than the first of the year. School, college, a first job and fall sports are just a few. Create your own list and place your characters in that scenario.

Winter

- Unusually warm weather followed by extreme cold wreaks havoc on orchards and the commerce of a community. Who might be affected? What's the long-term impact. Short term? Consider what characters have the most at stake in the situation. One should be a protagonist and another the antagonist.

- Limited snowfall for the past few years has nearly devastated the local ski industry. Now the snow is back. What changes take place at individual resorts? Did an owner recently sell out for a song to a competitor, only to regret his decision? Does he try to get back his business?

- An adopted child from a warm climate experiences snow for the first time. This might make a kid book story spark, or perhaps a scene in adult fiction.

- Holiday gatherings (are there ever too many family gathering stories with all their attendant interactions, conflicts and resolutions?

- What if you want to write about someone on the run in depths of Winter? What physical trials will s/he endure?

Whatever kind of journal you use, not only will it become a primary source of writing inspiration, but it should, with some time perspective, yield insight into your life. And that can only help your writing.

Ten Tips - Finding Names For Characters

Many times the creative process of the author is stifled because he gets stuck with naming a main or supporting characters. To 'get the show on the road' quickly, and not lose time when he may be approaching a deadline, he could use on of these ten tips to help him choose a name:

Choose a name indigenous to the area he lives or works in. Irish names, for instance, are different from British and American Names. It helps the reader place your character before location description.Use name generators on Facebook or other places on the internet. They could help you get names for gangsters, stripper or porn stars if you needed one. There are generators for fantasy names if that is your genre. You may consult a list fort baby names like babynames(dot)com or in books where names may even be divided into gender and nationality.Let your character be more relevant to his part by giving him a name with meaning. The challenge is finding surnames for him. You could dig into online family trees and heritages for surnames that may apply to your character.Choose an 'eanie, meanie, miney, mo' approach by using a phonebook with a character name disclaimer at the end of your novel.Use random names from the crew of a movie when the credits roll by.Look at your spam mail harvest for 'real' names.Look in foreign newspapers when a foreign character needs to be named.Google the words 'Board of Directors' and then mix and match the names and surnames for inspiration. With military thrillers, Google names of foreign parliament and organization members in the respected countries and mix them up.

Now, one more problem is eradicated in the author's creative process to help him write more efficiently by focusing on the process that is most important, writing.

Staying With Your Writing For the Long Haul

Any long project-writing a novel or memoir, say, or perhaps a book to promote your business-takes perseverance. Even engaging in relaxing activities like hobbies we enjoy takes a bit of stick-to-it-iveness. I love knitting, for instance, but it takes me forever to finish a shawl or sweater. And sometimes sticking with it is difficult because I get bored. Or I get an idea for another project and that one seems more exciting. Because, let's face it, for creative types, there is nothing so engaging as beginning a new project.

But we miss out on a lot if we don't finish projects. We miss out on the satisfaction that moving all the way through a process from start to finish gives us. We miss out on the chance to share our creations with the world. And in the case of writing, we miss out on a crucial aspect-that of another person reading our work. Communication, after all, implies a sending and a receiving. And if the receiving, or reading, is not present we feel we're missing a key element. This is why so many writers are so keen on publishing, sometimes to the point of obsessing about finding an agent long before the book is done.

Clearly, then, it behooves us to develop some strategies for staying with your creative work for the long haul. Here are some I've used successfully:

1. Recognize that Rome wasn't built in a day. In this era of instant everything, we sometimes forget that things take time. If you accept this simple truth, it is much easier to make slow, steady progress on a project.

2. Give yourself credit for what you've already accomplished. Too often, we bemoan how much more we have to do instead of celebrating what has already happened. Written 30 pages of a novel? Awesome! If you did it once, you can do it again!

3. Chunk it down. The single best way to approach a long project is to chunk it down into manageable steps. Perhaps you started by dividing your project into small chunks, but got caught up in the process and forgot about that as you went. Go back and chunk it down.

4. Keep the Fires Burning. Do you still have the spark that got you going on the project burning within? Sometimes as you are slogging through the middle section of a long project, it is hard to remember why on earth you wanted to do it. Reconnect with the fire. Go back to your early notes. Meditate. Write about it in your journal.

5. Remember that the hard part is over. You never, ever, have to begin this project again, because you are already in the middle of it. Yes, the beginning of a project can be the most fun, but also recall how hard it is to face that very, very blank screen. Once you've thrown some words at the computer, the project takes on a life of its own.

So there you have it-five ways to stay with your creative projects for the long haul. Apply them whenever you feel yourself lagging or lamenting your progress. Repeat as often as necessary!

Work From Home Creative Writing Jobs

It is possible that you are looking for freelance writing work from home, but those dry as dust non-fiction topics hold no interest for you. You have a creative bent and you want to use those skills. But can you actually make good money from freelance creative writing jobs? It's possible, but not easy. The internet is replete with blogging, copy and article writing job listings - great resources if you want to earn an income from your writing skills. However openings for creative writing seem to be few and far between, at least on first look.

There are several opportunities available for creative freelancers though. Don't forget that if all else fails, it is also possible to let loose your creativity to transform the most sedate and dry topics. Many writers do manage to make a good living from freelance writing while remaining true to their creative streak.

Research the creative avenues

The first step is to look at the various niche markets for your creative brand of writing. There are many publications, both online as well as offline that buy essays, fiction, and poetry. Find these and look for ways to work from home as a freelance writer with them.

Writing for magazines

There are many popular magazines, both print and online publications that purchase creative pieces from freelancers. Look at editions of magazines such as 'The New Yorker' to get an idea of the kind of articles in demand.

Greeting card verses

There are several greeting card firms that buy poetry for their cards covering a wide range of occasions. If you have a gift for that sort of writing, this may be just the right option for you. This can prove very lucrative for those gifted few who can deliver quality verse. The demand is not seasonal, as anniversaries, special occasions, festive seasons and birthdays end up covering the entire year. The industry is not affected by ups and downs in the economy.

Creative articles

While this may initially seem to be just the opposite of the kind of work a creative writer is looking for, the market can provide a lot of room for loosening the reins on your creativity. Good writers realize that it is quite possible to blend creative writing skills with factual accounts to add more interest and depth to the piece.

Other creative avenues

There are several other possibilities that allow you to showcase your creative writing skills. Among these are:

AnthologiesArt supportBloggingEbooksEssaysEvent MaterialsGhostwritingGift BooksMemoirsVows, toasts, prayersSlogansScriptwritingSongwritingSpeechwriting

These are just a few examples of some of the wide variety of opportunities available for freelancers looking to utilize their creative talent. Carry out online research on the genre of your choice, then look for assignments in the market, and finally get down to the business of writing and being paid for it. Just remember creative writing jobs require a lot of passion and patience, so stay committed to this profession.

Why A Writer Writes

I had an experience recently that answered the question for me: why do writers write? I was sitting in my office working on my next book.

Writers' doubts.

As I worked, I was thinking the thoughts all writers must think when starting a new project: What am I doing? Why am I writing this book? Will I ever finish it? Will it ever amount to anything? Will anyone ever want to read it? Will it make a difference in the world?

A call from a reader.

Just then, the phone rang.

"Hello, I'm George Mabon," the caller said. "I'm an estates lawyer."

I said, "Yes sir, what can I do for you today?"

"Well, you've already done it," he said. "I just called to say thank you for your article on how to estimate costs in business litigation."

My mind raced back through all of the articles I had ever written on many subjects: intuition, manifestation, healing, and earlier articles in my chosen profession, law. What article, I thought.

"Could you please remind me a little bit about the article, Mr. Mabon?" I said.

"Yes, it's the one where you talk about all of the different types of attorney and client time and expense that have to go into the litigation process and how whether to take any of those steps has to be balanced against their cost and the amount in controversy in the dispute."

My mind keeps racing back until it comes to the shocking realization that the article he's talking about was published in a local bar association magazine 30 years ago.

"If I recall, Mr. Mabon, that article was written quite some time ago," I said.

"Yes, but I've been using it a couple of times a month ever since it came out. You see, I mostly write wills and trusts, but people often ask me about disputes and courts. And I use your article to tell them what they can expect by way of costs. The article is quite accurate and my clients experience usually comes out just like the article predicts. And I was doing that again today, and I realized that I had never said thanks for all the help that that article has allowed me to give my clients over the years. So, I wanted to call and do that."

"Wow, thank YOU, Mr. Mabon," I said, "you've made my day!"

"You're welcome," he said.

We talk for a while, and, after exchanging a few more pleasantries, we ring off.

Encouragement today from an old article.

And I get to think about it. That article was on of the first ones I had ever written, and it was done 30 years ago. I remember wondering at the time whether anyone would publish it, whether anyone would read it, and whether it would make any difference, or whether it would get lost in the blizzard of information everyone's exposed to.

And now, whilst thinking similar thoughts about the book I'm currently working on, I get a call out of the blue from someone who read the old article when it was published and who has often used it during the past 30 years to make a difference in his world.

The gifts of intuition and the means to carry it out.

And I think: that's why writers write: something inside prompts them to share an experience that's meant to be shared in a way that will make some difference in the world. And that intuition carries with it the energy to overcome all of the drawbacks, rejections, and difficulties to putting that experience into print and out to the world.

I'm thankful to Mr. Mabon for calling to thank me, and I'm thankful to the universe for Mr. Mabon's call at a key moment to remind me that writers are given special gifts. Writers are first given the ability to communicate insight through the written word to others. Writers are then given the gift of life experience. They are sometimes given the gift of insight into that experience. And when an intuition with an insight into experience comes, writers are given the gift of the creative energy to make their writing exist in a tangible form accessible to the world.

Why writers write.

Why do writers write? They write because they have been given something special. They write because they are compelled to. They write because they are fulfilling their destiny to use the gifts they have been given to make a difference in the world.

And that's why writers write.

Writer's Block and Story Ideas

It doesn't matter if you write fiction or non-fiction, if you use paper and pencil or pen, if you use a computer's word processor, if you are an experienced author or an aspiring one. At one time or another, everyone who puts one word in front of another for people to read faces a blank page that seems to want to stay blank.

Of course no page fills itself up. But when the ideas are flowing, it can certainly seem that way. It's when ideas have gone into hiding that the blank page is so daunting. In fact, it can cause you to believe that you must be a dreadful writer if you can't think of anything to write. And that's when the term "writer's block" rears its ugly head.

Writers can get blocked so easily, it's a wonder any of us ever writes anything. But the truth is, writer's block is an internal phenomenon. What's blocked is the writer's psyche. I'm no psychologist, but I've had my share of inner "demons" and they all spring from the same source inside the human brain.

But it doesn't have to get as far as depression or low self-esteem. The truth is, writers write when they have something to say.

So the minute that dreaded blank page makes your heart skip a beat because you think you've lost the ability to write, here are some steps to take. Try any or all -- whatever works.

Tune into your environment, engaging all your senses.

1.) Are there sounds?

A clock ticking, children playing outside, the roar of traffic, a distant train whistle, a woodpecker. Just keep listening. Jot down each sound for at least five minutes, or until you're itching to write. Do any of the sounds evoke an emotion? Is the woodpecker annoying? Imagine being exhausted and just on the edge of sleep when it starts rat-a-tat-tatting away at insects in a nearby tree. Can you use this as a story starter?

Idea: Why is this character exhausted? Is it early morning or mid-afternoon? Is this a much-needed nap or a shift-worker bedding down for her "night's" sleep during the day? Or is your character on the run and trying to sleep by day, because he's been traveling under cover of darkness?

Does a train whistle evoke an emotional response. I've personally always thought there was a lonesome quality to distant train whistles. Nearby, they sound like foghorns and elicit an entirely different reaction. Still, as the train recedes in the distance, what was a mind-numbing blast becomes haunting, like a memory.

What would your reaction to a sudden loud train whistle be if you were stalled on the train tracks? What if you had a child locked into a safety seat in the back of your car? Could you get yourself and your child out in time? Write the scene, including the emotion.

Is wind whispering through pine trees, whining through gaps around the windows, moaning throughout a stormy night? Listen with your inner ear and write how these sounds make you feel.

Does a ticking clock make you crazy because you can't get it out of your head? Could it actually drive you insane? Speculate and write.

Do city sounds make you yearn for the peace of the country? Do country noises make you yearn for the familiarity of the city -- even the random gunshot and blare of horns? Writing about these feelings will clarify them.

2.) Is there a fragrance in the air?

Is someone baking, cooking dinner, spraying hairspray, using cologne, freshening the air? Aromas can evoke powerful memories and emotions. Think about baking cookies in Grandma's (or Mom's) kitchen and start writing while the memory is fresh. Don't forget to write in the aromas and the feelings.

Have the nearby fields been plowed and treated with animal fertilizer? Did a skunk spray its way out of danger close by? Does freshly-mown clover hay smell sweet and earthy or does it send your sinuses into an uproar? Whatever your reaction, write about it.

3.) Explore the textures around you.

Gently rub your hands across various surfaces, almost like a whisper. Compare and contrast your own reactions to feeling brick, stone, sandpaper, silk or satin, burlap, cotton, leather, wood, glass, wallpaper, velvet, human skin, metal, rubber, plastic, a toy stuffed animal, etc.

Did anything give you goosebumps? Arouse you? Repel you? Send you on a memory journey? Write what you felt with your sense of touch as well as what emotions were elicited.

4.) Sample foods.

Taste various foods for their temperature, spiciness, texture, flavor and ethnic culture. You have to eat, anyway, so why not make it a writing exercise as well? Tune into your reactions. Did something make you grimace? Was it too sweet or was it sour? Did it taste like last week's garbage or did your eyes roll back in your head and you sighed, because the taste was exquisite?

5. Look and see.

It's possible to look, but not to really see. As writers, we need to do both. And we need to see on more than one level. Focus on a small section of a room. The trick is to keep narrowing the area of vision until you've zoomed in as far as you can with the naked eye.

Let's say you picked a coffee table to examine. Even if it has very little on it, chances are the longer you go over it with a detailed eye, the more you will see. Is that a shadowy beverage stain in the wood grain? Does the table's glass inset have flaws in it? Tiny bubbles or other imperfections? Inside the art book on the table, is there anything loose? Anything personal? Something hidden under the end papers?

Once you have seen all there is to see in this small area, try to imagine ways in which your discoveries, however small or insignificant, might affect people in a fictional situation. What emotions did the items evoke? Which reactions were the most knee-jerk and which were the mildest? Why?

The key with this technique is to engage your senses, consider possible character reactions.

You carry your five senses around with you all the time. If you learn to hone those senses so that they work for you on command, your prose will begin to show it. What? You're not writing yet? Get to it!

Writing A Business Topic Book In 3 Easy Steps

You may think you couldn't possibly write a business topic book but, here's an easy way to go about it -- at least to get well started in it.

Say you wanted to write a book on publishing a newsletter.

Step 1.

First of all, using your word processor, you would write 3 headings. These headings would be the three most general areas you'd want to break down the process.

In this case, let's say this would be "writing", "designing" and "producing". So write these down, one per line, leaving 4 lines in between each heading.

A) Under the "Writing" heading:

You'd want to tell your reader what he/she will need to do first. For example, what would be the first things you'd need to do if you wanted to publish a newsletter? You'd need to know what you'll write about. You'd have a specialty area that your newsletter would cover. Then you would have an audience to whom you intend your newsletter to go to. Who are they? Describe them.

Write down everything you can think of regarding this area that you would want to tell your reader. Just write it all down, one word or one phrase per line with a line space in between. You'll come back to that later.

B) Then under the next heading "designing":

Begin to do the same as in your first heading but this time it has to do with the designing of the newsletter.
You might want to suggest a particular program to use, or talk about the one you use yourself. Or you might tell the reader what is available and let him/her choose what they would prefer.

You might want to talk about design, style, size and number of pages you'll plan.
So think of everything you want to discuss in this section. Again just write down what comes to mind.

C) Then under your "production" heading:

Do the same again. For example you would list the production steps on what will need to be done... the printing, the distribution, etc...

Just keep writing down the thoughts in the same manner. Think of everything that would be involved in your particular business topic: planning, where to get information, headlines, graphics, how it's going to be distributed, etc. etc.

Step 2.

Once your mind is depleted of all the ideas, go back over your list and expand on each one. Put yourself in the place of the reader, reading as you would want to be taught by someone about your subject of interest. Write as you would speak to a person, a friend.

As you write, you will re-arrange the words you listed and place them in order of discussion, as you need. And then continue to expand.

Re-read and make sure it is the way you want everything to be. If not, make adjustment. That's one nice thing about word processing programs, you can just insert or delete anything you want. Make yourself a copy in case you ever want to return to the original thought, as you go along.

Step 3.

Once you've written all that you have, go back and edit, re-arrange, organize, change as you see fit. Then wherever appropriate, add a heading that relates to your paragraph topic. Make sure the flow is right from the start of the process to the end.

Go through the whole work again and edit. Take out anything that is redundant or unnecessary. Read it as if you were your audience. Split up long, confusing sentences into shorter, more spiffy phrases. Use action verbs that show rather than adjectives and adverbs that tell (example: "The large wild dog came toward me as if he was going to tear me to pieces." Replace it with, "The killer dog lunged at me viciously.")

Then, go over it again and edit some more. No kidding. The secret to good writing is "edit, edit, edit" until there is nothing else to edit. You might ask some people you trust to read it and comment on it. Listen to them and incorporate in your work the criticism and ideas that you find constructive.

Once this is done and you are happy with your work, find an appropriate title and titles within each area that you can use to name your chapters or sections. Look for a phrase that will describe the main idea or point of your section or chapter. You may find that some sections need to be split up to better formulate two chapters.

Then you're ready to write it up into your final draft or manuscript for a printed book or an e-book production. Go ahead get started today. Good writing!/dmh

Writing a Novel Scene

The scene is the most essential component of fiction. It has a verbal content where you have lines spoken by the characters. For instance, you may have a young girl being ardently courted by a man. A scene also has a nonverbal content.

If a fiction story writer has convinced the readers of what he wants them to think, then the scene is a successful one. In every scene, there is a conflict that one or more characters have to face. The way the characters deal with these conflicts tell us something about them. It also lets the story progress. There are good exercises that can help beginning novel writers to develop their novel writing skills to construct scenes. This is one exercise that novice novelists can practice. Get a list of simple elements such as:

* a transportation strike causing downtown traffic

* a young business man named David Williams, has aggressive personality and faced with many business plights

* Joey Smith, fresh and successful lawyer yet unhappy with his profession

These are only examples. The list may go on as you desire. Using these elements, give yourself 30 minutes to construct a scene that makes use of the elements and leads to a significant conclusion. You will be amazed how easy it is to construct a scene and how other scenes logically come to mind instantaneously just after you've thought of one. When constructing a scene, a freelance novelist or someone who is hiring a ghostwriter should know what they want to show their reader regarding the characters and their predicaments. Once the writer has decided on this, producing the scenes is already very easy.

So the fiction writer needs to take into account the events that are put into the story. Make sure that they will help you influence the readers on how you want them to think of your characters, your characters' traits and values. Write down rational and believable events that will effectively reveal the attributes of your characters.

Sometimes, scenes will present themselves consequentially after you have had your plot. For example, if your protagonist is on a flight to a certain destination, maybe some people from the customs are going to go against her from some reason and the protagonist faces up to this people. This is only an example and there are actually numerous of automatic scenes that will suggest themselves to you.

There are no specifications on the length of a scene, for as long as it is able to convey the message to the readers. A scene could comprise of a single sentence or it could run to as far as 20 pages. The goals of every scene should be met by the time that it ends: to let the readers be more familiar with the characters and the conflicts should have intensified. It is not necessary to set an endless series of conflicts. What is meant is that once the characters succeed on one conflict, another tenser scene follows. After the hero has gotten rid of the terrorist bomb, he becomes a celebrated man. But the terrorists are furious and they plan a scheme to kill him and his loved ones.

There should be as few characters as possible involved in a scene. If your plot however, require you, to include several realistic characters in your story such as in cases when your protagonist is a commanding officer of a military quad, or the head of a school, then follow this tip. Introduce your protagonist first before any character in the story. Put him in a scene that will give the readers ideas on his personality and nature. After that you can establish another scene where each of the supporting characters can be phased in. Make sure that this scene will also be beneficial in the exposure of the qualities of the protagonist. This should also help in the progress of the plot.

If you can successfully build interest from the readers to the different character, then this is a great step in your success of building up their interest in the whole story.

Writer's Block: Three Ways To End It and Three More on How to Avoid It

The dreaded bane of a happy writer, writer's block attacks every writer from time to time. It is as unpredictable as the flu, and often more uncomfortable! Why it occurs can sometimes be a mystery. How to end it, however, is fairly simple and straightforward. These techniques will help a writer stop writer's block from paralyzing them, and avoid blocks in the future.

1. Always have multiple writing projects going on at the same time. Even if you are facing a deadline, or have a major project going, writer's block is best avoided by working on several projects at the same time, even if you only work on each for a little bit of time. The reason for this is that multiple projects allow many avenues of thought. If you get stumped on one project working on another can open avenues of thought again. Having another project also helps avoid frustration related to writer's block, reducing related stress and anxiety, both of which only tend to increase the tendency that a block will linger.

2. Leave the project alone for a while and take a mental break. Exercise, sports, or some type of physical activity releases endorphins that can stimulate brain activity and free up clogged avenues of thought. The simple act of taking a break, even a sedentary one, can also allow writers to relax and free our minds from excessive concentration on our subject. This alone can break the cycle of writer's block and allow free ideas to re-enter our minds.

3. Use an outline or organization system and work on different parts each time. This will allow you to work on one section if you get stuck on another. As you progress through a section it is easier to overcome being stuck somewhere else. In addition, an outline gives focus and direction for a writer and allows us to summarize ideas for a section or chapter. This prevents a block because the ideas are already formulated and expressed. From this point they need only be expanded upon and fleshed out.

To avoid writer's block follow these simple strategies:

1. Write only about something that has a strong appeal for you. Passion produces power and that power can easily be used to produce a solid piece of writing that is filled with strong voice and attitude. Generally speaking, this is some of the best writing to read because it tends to be captivating and exciting.

2. If you are feeling self-conscious about your writing and are unsure if you can handle a particular topic sit down with a few friends and have a casual discussion. Keep note of the best ideas and use them to formulate an outline or summary. This will give you confidence that you know what you are doing and will generate ideas that will strengthen your piece.

3. Plan properly for a project. Use an outline. Break the project into segments and flesh out each segment so that the project is "written" before actual paragraphs are produced.

Writer's block is not a condition that just appears and stumps a writer. It is always a result of some issue that can be dealt with by employing strategies that avoid it. If it does happen, and it does to every writer at some point, using simple strategies that clear the mind and allow ideas to flow again will take care of it. Lack of proper preparation for a writing project is usually the biggest culprit, followed by a lack of familiarity with a concept. Using the above strategies will solve both issues and prevent writer's block from taking hold.

Writing Down Your Soul: How to Activate and Listen to the Extraordinary Voice Within

You could pray, or meditate, or dream, or visit a shaman, or a minister, or a hypnotherapist. With so many routes into inner consciousness, why write? Of all the ways to get in touch with God, as you understand God... to hear the small, still voice pointing you in the right direction... why take the time to write?

One reason: it works. It works amazingly well. If you want to engage in a vibrant conversation with the wisdom that dwells just a hair below your conscious awareness, write. Write every day, at approximately the same time, with passion, honesty, and the intention of speaking with and listening to the voice within.

Janet Conner was escaping a terrible situation of domestic abuse. While trying to figure out how she and her son could live and how they could eat, she realized she had hit rock bottom. With no other advisers, she listened to her own inner voice, which told her to start writing. As she did, Janet's inner voice gained clarity and strength, and she felt an incredible connection to the divine, and almost immediately miracles began to happen.

Today, research scientists in psychology, physics, biochemistry, and neurology are providing peeks into what consciousness is and how it works. Their findings give us intriguing clues as to what is actually happening in and through our bodies, minds, and spirits as we roll pen across paper. Writing Down Your Soul explores some of this research and instructs readers how to access the power and beauty of their own deepest selves.

Christmas Letters: Why You Should Write One!

Christmas letters are a great way to keep in touch with the people who are woven into the tapestry of your life. You acknowledge the impact each one of them has had on your life through one annual, thoughtful letter.

Christmas Letters to Friends Help You to Consider Who Is Important in Your Life

Who's important to you? Who should you include on your mailing list? Consider including

? Family, both near and far
? Distant relatives
? Close friends currently and from your past, both near and far
? People with whom you work
? Fellow worshippers in your church
? Neighbors

Perhaps you want to reserve your letter for the people who are a distant part of your life, both in space and time. It's a great way to connect when you aren't able to keep in touch on a daily or weekly basis. However, a well-written letter can be a bright spot in the day of the people around you, even if they already know what is going on in your life. Who couldn't use a smile or a chuckle these days?

Creative Christmas Letters Allow You to Consider What Has Been Important in Your Life

Taking time to look at where you've been helps you to figure out where you're going. Crafting a creative letter allows you to slow down for a few minutes and reflect on the successes--and failures--of the past year and to decide what you will do with them.

Writing a Christmas Letter Gives You Opportunity to Consider the Season and Then to Do Something Special in Honor of It

Whether the holiday is sacred or secular for you, the time of year is unique. You have special music, special parties, and special activities. You also have a special letter! After all, when else in your year do you take the time to write a letter?

Christmas Greeting Letters Are a Bright Spot in a Dark Season

The days are short, the season is cold--in many places--and sometimes you look back over the year and see only negatives. But because your letter should be filled with the sunshine you've stored up from warmer days, it forces you to recognize that there has been goodness in your year, no matter how small.

One Christmas Letter for All People

The true beauty of writing this letter is that you get to write one letter and send it to lots of people! In days past when people hand-wrote letters to one another, each one was unique. While you may lament the loss of this art, Christmas letters have a different purpose. They help you to consider who is important in your life, to reflect on what you've accomplished in the past year, and to give honor to the season.

Now is the time to write your letter! Open up a new document, get out paper and pen, do whatever it takes, but write that letter today!

7 Characteristics of Writing Power

What inspires you to write? What keeps you disciplined in order to write immensely? The common denominator is passion. There is an infinite spectrum of opportunities to produce stories, articles, poetry or any other form of creative writing. Inspiration is produced from emotion: what you feel, see, taste, hear or touch. Everyone is born with the potential to do our best and be the best! We have a choice to either bury that potential or grow it. The key to creation is purpose. Vision manifests that purpose.

With reading and writing copiously, you will find your niche, edit, tweak and edit again. We can compare producing masterful literary compositions, to that of a chef who religiously cooks and experiments with different ingredients. The result for the chef is to produce delectable and exquisite entr?es, appetizers and desserts. As with a chef, our genre will not always appeal to the masses. Everyone's literary taste buds are as diverse as races, creeds and nature. As writers, we have a responsibility to avoid intentionally harming our audiences based on maliciousness, carelessness or just because we have the right to freedom of speech.

Your willingness to persevere with a positive attitude will keep procrastination, complacency and fear from crippling and shattering your dreams. So pick up that pen, get those fingers to the keys of a typewriter, a keyboard or speak into a tape recorder. There are people who wait for things to happen, watch things happen and wonder what happened. Be the person to make things happen. Become proactive in every aspect of your life.

Here are seven characteristics that give power to your writing discipline:

1. Potential

2. Purpose

3. Positivity

4. Perseverance

5. Passion

6. Production

7. Proactivity

Whatever you do, keep a positive attitude, despite how dreary the day may look outside or whatever obstacle rolls your way. Remember, you are in charge of your attitude. How you approach and deal with situations and people primarily depends on how you choose to handle it. Your attitude and approach will either enhance or destroy your character.

In order for your writing passion to be manifested, you must use your potential with great purpose. Continue to persevere with a positive attitude and remain proactive in order to produce your personal power of character behind your pen.

Creative Writing - Is Your Character Religious - Better Get That Religion Correct

One interesting thing about creative writing is that you can use stereotypes and say things that you can't say in public due to our politically correct world. However, you need to make sure that the stereotypes you use are correct, and in the case of developing a character of a certain religious background, you need to understand that religion so you don't mess it up. There are a couple reasons why this is critical; some of your readers may be of that religion, or a literary critic could be of that religion.

If you mess that up, they will never live it down, and take you to task. Perhaps, it is for this reason that as a writer I have reference books on writing that I keep next my desk. One book I'd like to recommend to you was written by Martin Roth who is a Hollywood screenwriter and he wrote most of the episodes for Hawaii 50; the name of the book is "The Fiction Writers Silent Partner," and it is a book I highly recommend.

We all know the basics such as Hindus don't eat cow meat, and Muslims don't eat pork or drink alcohol. We also know the devout Catholics still eat fish on Fridays, but can you name one single religious activity of a Jehovah's Witness? Well then, you need to learn if you're going to have a character who happens to be a JW. Let's say your character is in the Jehovah's Witness' Pioneer Program, are you aware of the types of activities, that they are involved with? Do you know what type of jobs they're allowed to take and how many hours they are allowed to work?

What if one of your characters comes from an Amish family, can you describe how they grew up, what their family life was like, or how they got along without modern amenities? Or what it was like to ride a bicycle and drive a buggy everywhere around town? Are you seeing what I'm trying to get at, the reality is you need to know if you're going to develop your characters correctly, and if any of your characters have any religious background. Since about 80% of the population does, at some point or another you're going to need to know this information. So please consider this.
